Bird Flight Diverters
& Aerial Robotics
An estimated 57 million birds are killed each year in the United States from collisions with powerlines. Bird flight diverters are devices designed to deter birds from striking powerlines while in flight. While BFDs are effective at increasing visibility and preventing collisions, the installation is dangerous. Attaching the plastic diverters to powerlines typically involves linemen hanging out of a helicopter and attaching the devices one at a time. The engineers at FulcrumAir recognized the safety concerns of this approach and developed an ideal alternative. The LineFly is the first in FulcrumAir’s suite of aerial robotics. A fully autonomous robot, the LineFly installs bird flight diverters quickly, safely, and efficiently. There’s never been a better solution.
The LineFly is the safest and most efficient method for installing bird flight diverters, automatically and precisely placing 24 BFDs in a matter of minutes.
No Helicopter Needed
With no helicopter needed, the LineFly contributes to safety and environmental efforts by reducing carbon output and limiting close-contact for workers.
The LineFly is capable of operating in an energized environment provided limits of approach are maintained.
In addition to preventing bird deaths and collisions, bird flight diverters effectively protect powerlines from the damage caused by migratory bird impact.
Keeping the Skies Safe
For 20+ Years
Power Line Sentry of Wellington, Colorado, leads the industry with quality wildlife mitigation products. The LineFly, only from FulcrumAir, was designed with Power Line Sentry’s bird flight diverters in mind to ensure safe and efficient BFD installation. The bird flight diverters are expertly manufactured with yellow prism tape and 24-hour glow tape for maximum visibility in all conditions. Tested for use on shield wire, OPGW, guy wire, and energized conductor (up to 240 kV), they can withstand 100 mph winds with a lifespan of up to 20 years. In addition to BFDs, Power Line Sentry manufactures a complete line of other industry-leading wildlife mitigation product solutions for electrical utilities.
How We Install
Recognizing a need that we could fill, we teamed up with Power Line Sentry to create the first autonomous robot designed specifically for bird flight diverter installation. Our engineers worked tirelessly to produce and perfect the LineFly, capable of installing 24 bird flight diverters in a matter of minutes with custom spacing and an accuracy of up to 2 inches.

The Linefly can be installed using either a bucket truck, crane or a UAV as required, subject to regional operational restrictions.
Sophisticated onboard electronics and software provide fully automated operation, with a seamless transition to remote manual control if required.
Urethane drive wheels provide high levels of traction for operation on sloping wires.
The Linefly can be quickly programmed to install BFDs at any desired spacing.
Four drums can be quickly loaded with up to six BFDs each, giving a total capacity of 24 BFDs.
The lightweight aluminum frame makes in-field handling easy, reducing operator fatigue.
